Emily Lou Cook

Emily Lou Cook passed away at home surrounded by her family at 6:45 p.m. on 15 September 2017 in Windsor, CO after a long battle with chronic heart failure.  Our beloved Emily Lou Cook was born Emily Lou Barta in Lexington, NE on April 16, 1940. Her parents were both from Nebraska; her father a first generation Czech-American. She was the younger sister of Glenn E. Barta. Em met her would-be husband, Lee R. Cook, while they both attended Colorado State University in 1958. They were wed in Cozad, NE on October 8, 1960. She is survived by her husband of almost 57 years, Lee; three daughters, Tracie Bradford and husband, Bill of Wichita, KS, Holly Smethers and husband, Tommy of Justin, TX, Susan Cook, of Andover, MA, and one son, Brian Cook of Fort Collins, CO; eight grandchildren, Shane, Blake, Amy, Billy, Samuel, Megan, Evan, and Emmy; seven great-grandchildren, Jace, Joci, Kyler, Leila, Becca, Braxton, and Josey. She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Barta; father, Emil Barta; and brother, Glenn E. Barta.

Em preferred to be titled Domestic Engineer, but was so much more to her husband and children. She devoted her life to her family as an involved mother and wife during the family’s many moves throughout Lee’s military career. She will be remembered as a Brownie/Girl Scout leader, Officers Wives’ Club volunteer, traveling soccer/sport parent, room mother, music leader, musician/percussionist, cheerleader, breast cancer survivor, and for twenty years, keeper of an aquatic frog that her son acquired through a “grow-a-frog-kit” Christmas gift. Em loved reading and was always thinking of others. Many were recipients of her notorious newspaper and magazine article clippings. Traveling and spending time with dear friends, especially her five childhood friends from Cozad, NE were some of her most favorite things.

She will best be remembered for her love of family and her selfless devotion to others.

Memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Three Trees Chapel, 13416 W Arbor Place, Littleton, CO with Eric Biehl officiating. A reception will follow at the same location.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association and/or Susan G. Komen.
